Can A Dishwasher Tablet Really Clean Your Toilet? Here’s What Happens

Some products are named after their specific roles. But not all of them remain useful solely because their brand says so.

It happens to lots of products we use all the time. We can name them, but because we don’t advertise them for free, we’ll list them from memory.

Most of them have untapped potential, especially for cleaning. One of them is found near or under your kitchen sink.

Yep, I mean the dishwasher tablet, which I initially thought was only for kitchen cleaning. But someone used it to clean their toilet, weird, right?

That’s true. It might be weird, but it works well to clean the toilet bowl.

Imagine all the dirty, harmful, and hostile chemicals that lived in that toilet bowl. I never thought that a dishwasher tablet could be that effective.

It’s manufactured to stick and remove hard minerals, water spots, and grease. That’s why it works well.

However, other people mix the dissolved tablet with other cleaning agents to ensure sanitation.

To answer whether it’s effective, yes, a dishwasher tablet helps clean the toilet bowl.

To-do Procedure

Here’s how to clean the toilet bowl using the dishwasher tablet:

  1. Wear plastic gloves, enough to prevent dampening your hands.
  2. Drop one dishwasher tablet in the toilet bowl and let it sit for 15-30 minutes.
  3. Scrub the toilet bowl using a toilet brush after dissolving the tablet.
  4. After scrubbing, flush the toilet.

Does the Tablet Help Clean Other Spots?

In the YouTube video clip of Andrea Jean Co, she used the dishwasher tablet not only in the toilet bowl, but also on 4 different spots.

Here are some things she said she tested with a dishwasher tablet:

  • Bathtub: Fill the tub with warm water and dissolve the tablet. Leave it for a few minutes and drain the water. After that, gently brush the tub.

Why It’s Dangerous: Bathtubs can’t handle the harsh effects of the dishwasher tablet; avoid doing this.

  • Oven: Slightly dampen the dishwasher tablet and grease the inside surface. Use a wet cloth to continue cleaning the oven.

Why It’s Dangerous: Check the manual first before cleaning; some brands don’t prefer ovens to be cleaned this way.

  • Walls: Use a dishwasher tablet dissolved in hot water to remove the water residue found on the walls.

Warning: Its effectiveness can affect painted or papered surfaces, not-so-great advice to follow.

  • Smelly Washing Machine: In her video, she cleaned her washing machine using hot water and the dissolved tablet.

Warning: Experts on appliances confirmed this as a bad idea. It’s best not to follow this advice.

These pieces of advice from Andrea are more harmful than cleaning the surfaces. This is because the dishwasher tablet is too strong to apply to them.

Instead of following Andrea’s pieces of advice, appliance experts recommend using baking soda, vinegar, grease remover, regular detergent, or limescale remover for effective, safe, and odorless cleaning.

Precautionary Tips for You

Dishwasher tablets are effective because the ingredients used are chemically stronger. Here are some tips to follow when using a dishwasher tablet:

  • Wear Plastic Gloves: Gloves must be worn for two primary reasons: skin protection and eye protection. Some dishwasher tablets irritate your skin and cause damage to your eyes when accidentally rubbed.
  • Away from Kids and Pets: Dishwasher tablets can be mistaken for candy. Put them in a place where both kids and pets can’t reach them. They’re unsafe, unconsumable, and harsh on skin-to-skin contact.
  • When Eyes are Affected: Rinse the affected eye for at least 30 minutes with lukewarm water. For emergency purposes (for US residents), contact the Poison Control number: 1-800-222-1222.
  • Only Useful in Kitchen and Toilet Bowl: Dishwasher tablets are potent, but they must be used only to clean the kitchen or toilet bowl. They may be effective as a cleaning agent, but they can cause skin irritation, wall discoloration, or destroy appliances.
  • Never Mix with Bleach: Dishwasher tablets are made with small amounts of bleach. Adding another bleach source could be a recipe for harm.

Does it Truly Work?

Dishwasher tablets work well against mineral rings and toilet stains that form within the toilet bowl.

However, it must be used for kitchen and toilet bowl cleaning because it’s damaging when tried on other spots or home appliances.

Those four spots where Andrea used the dishwasher tablet don’t tell the entire story. It can clean effectively, if that’s the only question.

But frequent usage of that tablet on appliances, tubs, and other spots in your home shortens their lifespan.

It works well, so well that it can cause irreparable damage.

Doesn’t Mean Too Effective Means It’s Better

Undoubtedly, the dishwasher tablet proved that it’s more than just its label and not just a kitchen cleaning agent.

However, its potency can cause damage; too much can be dangerous when handled irresponsibly.

The tablet is a reminder that you can do more than your name, but it is not a single product that cleans almost everything.

It’s now clear that no cleaning product is a one-size-fits-all solution.

But there’s one thing I’ve learned throughout: wear some gloves when handling the cleaning products.

Because it protects the eyes and the skin.
